Characteristics

These products consist of a steel substrate on which a coating consisting of aluminum (55%), zinc (43.4%) and silicon (1.6%) is applied through continuos hot dipping. Their main characteristics lie in their excellent corrosion resistance: several studies have shown that these steels, for the same thickness of the coating, have a resistance to salt spray 5 times higher than that of hot-dipped galvanized. They also look very nice, have a very good ability to reflect light and heat and are highly resistant to abrasion. In acidic environments (eg. urban or marine) the surface resists up to 315 ° C. Vice versa is not recommended for use in atmospheres at basic pH and in livestock areas.

Since the coating density is 3.8 kg/dm3 compared to 7.1 kg/dm3 of zinc, it follows that, for the same thickness of coating, there is a lower weight compared to hot-dip galvanized. This is another benefit, especially in the construction sector, where creating lighter structures is a crucial aspect.

Materials can be supplied with special requirements in the coating finish, surface quality and surface protection.

The coating finish has normal spangle, bright and silver, resulting from the growth of crystals of aluminum-zinc during solidification.

The surface appearance can be either A, B or C, unless otherwise requested at the time of the order, the material comes with surface A.

SURFACE APPEARANCE

A

Some small imperfections are possible such as small pits, variations in the size of the spangle, dark spots, light scratches and passivation marks

B

It is obtained by skin-passing. With this type of surface imperfections such as scratches are possible due to the passing process, streaks, irregularities but not cavities

C

Obtained by skin-passing. The best undamaged surface, the obvious uniformity of a high class finish; the other surface must be at least of type B.

There are various types of surface protection and must be properly indicated in the order:

Chemical passivation, traditionally chromium based; also available free of hexavalent chromium in accordance with the RoHS Directive; yellowish residue may be found on the surface but it does not alter the product characteristics

O

Oiled using oils that can be removed during greasing without compromising the coating

CO

Combination of oiling and chemical passivation to improve protection against corrosion

S

Organic passivation, commercially indicated with AFP (Anti Finger Print) or SPT (Resin Coating), consisting of a polymer film containing corrosion inhibitors; available free of hexavalent chromium; improves protection against corrosion, prevents the formation of imprints, facilitates scrolling during processing and behaves as a painting primer

P

Phosphation, particularly suitable for the application of a subsequent layer of paint

PO

Combination of phosphation and oiling to improve formability

U

Without any protection, under the full responsibility of the customer

Whatever form of surface protection is implemented it is very important that, during transport and storage, galvanized materials avoid, as much as possible, contact with moisture or water and are kept in a dry environment.

These steels are available with a wide range of characteristics, from commercial quality (DX51D) to those for deep drawing (DX54D and DX56D), construction products (S250GD) and high strength (HX340LAD).
