Characteristics

Thanks to rigorous control of the chemical composition and micro-structural characteristics, these steels are characterized by their enameling abilities, or rather their ability to withstand the tension induced by the enameling process and maintain a good surface appearance, reducing gaseous emissions during the enamel firing and guaranteeing perfect adhesion.

The enameling process involves the application of a vitreous layer containing certain oxides, namely enamel, to the previously prepared surface of semi-processed pieces. These are subsequently fired at a very high temperature (between 780° and 880°C) and the allowed to cool. This firing and cooling process allows the substrate and enamel to bind, creating a material that combines the advantages of steel with those of glass.

The entire process requires perfect control of all parameters. The choice in the type of steel to use is a complicated problem because it doesn't just depend on the characteristics of the final piece but also on the enameling process. To summarize, DC01EK, DC04EK and DC06EK steel are suitable for conventional enameling with one or two layers; DC04EK and DC06EK steel are particularly suitable for deep drawing. DC03ED, DC04ED and DC06ED are especially suitable for direct enameling as they have high decarburization, with maximum levels of carbon equal to 0.004%, and DC04ED DC06ED are more suitable for deep drawing.

These steels can be produced in static annealing or under vacuum.

The surface appearance is such as to ensure both the applying of the enamel and its uniformity after application.

The surface finish can be normal or rough. In the absence of specifications when ordering, products are supplied with normal surface.

For surface protection, the material is typically supplied oiled using oils that can be easily removed using alkaline solutions and most common solvents; on request, products can be supplied without oil, but in this case there is a much higher risk of rust.
